Save your skin !
Here’s how to save your skin and get it looking good after an overdose of colour on Holi
Knocked yourself out playing Holi yesterday? While the multicoloured festivities may have ended, the aftereffects of the festival tend to linger on a tad longer than necessary. The skin is the body’s largest organ. And this includes your nails as well as hair. So, it’s only fair that it gets the care it deserves. And in this case, perhaps the biggest concern is getting your skin and hair to recover from this festival.
Apply oil or gel to prevent the colours from seeping in too much and staying in your follicles longer than necessary. “Use the regular kind of oil that you’ve been using all along and get a massage for about 15 minutes. Rinse after a while with a mild shampoo. This prevents the cuticle from absorbing the colour right into it,” says skin specialist Dr Jamuna Pai.
Apart from your beautiful tresses, the skin to suffers from the riot of colour. Wash your face twice a day (no more) with warm water and a mild soap made for people with acne. Gently massage your face with circular motions. Don’t scrub. Overwashing and scrubbing can cause skin to become irritated. “Vaseline by itself has a deep moisturising effect. Apply this to the skin that has been exposed to the colour. Apart from that take a little besan and gram flour and add it to a bit of milk or dahi and mix it together. Apply this mixture to the skin,” adds Dr Pai. This combination has both anti-fungal as well as anti-bacterial effects.
You may also reach for a jar of body scrub and use it while showering for a few days. However, exercise caution when doing so, as being over-enthusiastic with the scrub can strip your skin of essential oils and leave it looking dry.
Also consider using an antibacterial soap for a few days to prevent any rashes from appearing on your body as a result of impurities in the colour. In the case of an allergic reaction, the best remedy is a fast-acting anti-allergen. “Levocetrizine is a fast acting anti-allergen and no water is required for this. It dissolves in the mouth and therefore is best when a person needs fast-acting relief in an emergency situation,” says Dr Sanjay Kapote, a GP
